North-East finance for entrepreneurs
Tomorrow 1DayLater will be featured in the business section of The Journal alongside a very awesome company called Finance Tree. They’re a local company that have many fingers in many financial pies and are all about helping local businesses and entrepreneurs to go the extra mile. Peter Hiscocks and Jonathan Gold were our mentors on the Sunderland Software course and they were influential in...

Why Mr Ambassador...
…you’re spoiling us!
We’ve decided, as enthusiastic lovers of all things North East, joining the largest network of ambassadors (One North East) would be a great idea. After meeting a very lovely and chatty Tori Clayton, we’re now proud to display the “passionate about the North East” brand!
In fact, you can see me on the list of amassadors, hoorah!

I'm a muppet. Slap me in the face
Ah…I was so eager for the world to see our excellent tutor, Mark Hill, at Teeside IDI (Institute of Digital Innovation) I made the silly mistake of handing Davids camera to an old lady sitting nearby.
For the record though I actually LOVE this comedy photo :) Not only is it a perfect example of how to take a bad photo but it also tells me I need to work on my “business...

Bark like a dog! Stand on one leg!
Heehee, exiting! As you know, me and Paul have been chosen as the case study for Sunderland Software City (which is awesome in it’s own right) and today we posed for some publicity snaps! They sent local photographer Christopher Best to the bibliodesk (aka library) and were asked to look at laptops, hold business cards, pretend to have a conversation, sit back-to-back, bark like a dog and...

Bootstrapping an office (for now)
As far as business bootstrapping goes, we’ve already done well for ourselves in finding grants, training and a great network - but today marks the start of our cheekiest yet, we’ve decided to temporarily locate our office in Newcastle City Library! In fact, I’m sat here right now, and this is what the view is like:
The building is livelier than most libraries, meaning...

Googles new "search options"
I must have missed this one because of the Thinking Digital Conference that was on at the time, but wow, Google have added a new link to their search page… “search options”
It’s usually a big deal when Google adds something to their pages because they tend to keep things as simple as possible, each link represents months (if not years) of careful planning and development,...

Finance GO!
Well it’s go johnny go go around here yet again.
After a fine morning of number crunching with our lovely and enthusiastic accountant Fiona (FEL Accounts) we’ve finally got some decent money forecasts we can rely on. I think me and David had a moment of realisation and clarity when we looked into the scary abyss that is our cashflow forecast….that pipe dream of a business 6...

How OAuth protects your identity
Now that the business plan is out of the way I’m free to get back into writing code for the upcoming 1DayLater release. The biggest part of the programming is the API which allows 3rd party developers to create “addons” to the system. Because you’re all security savvy you would never give your login details to these 3rd parties - which is where an awesome project called...
Business Blueprints
A Business Plan is quite simply the greatest document you’ll ever write. There, I said it. Most people associate writing a Business Plan with all manner of horrors like doing accounts and filing tax returns, and while it is an intense and involved process, it’s by no means a bad experience, in fact I’d say it’s good fun!
After some 100+ hours working on this behemoth of a...

Hydration centre for science nerds
A daydream, a flight of fancy….but can’t you imagine if we bought this comedy slice of wall near St James and turned it into a shop selling abacuses (abaci?) and flasks to science nerds.
I mean imagine all the geeks who’ll be undertaking long pilgramages to Science city. They’ll be parched if nothing else :) Offer them some juice and some words of encouragement....

Lovley music - Oonagh Cassidy
I met Oonagh recently after hearing her a play a short set at the Thinking Digital Conference, she’s a lovely Irish singer songwriter and said of me “the lovliest geek she’d ever met”, how could I not promote her music after that? You’ll be happy to read that she’s coming back to live and gig in Newcastle after a short hiatus away.
You can get her latest...
